Home cleaning, organization and lifestyle tips
Every winter, my skin would start flaking, turning red, and getting irritated. I tried dozens of creams before I figured it out: the key isn’t treating the damage afterward—it’s protecting beforehand. Now winter doesn’t scare me, and my skin stays soft and hydrated all season.
The good news? Proper winter skincare is something anyone can do. The bad news? Get it wrong, and you can make things worse.
Why Winter Is Hard on Your Skin
What You’ll Need
- Gentle cleanser (oil-based, milky, or mild foam)
- Alcohol-free hydrating toner
- Nourishing night cream and protective day cream
- Serum or face oil (optional but helpful)
- Lip balm
- Hand cream
Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1. Gentle Cleansing
In winter, ditch the harsh foaming gels and soaps. Switch to an oil-based cleanser, cleansing milk, or mild foam. And always wash with lukewarm water—never hot.

Step 2. Tone
Apply an alcohol-free toner to restore your skin’s pH balance and prep it for moisturizer. Look for hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid or aloe vera.
Step 3. Moisturize and Nourish

Morning: Use a lightweight moisturizer (not water-based—look for oils) plus cold protection. Apply at least 30–40 minutes before heading outside.
Evening: Go with a richer night cream containing oils, ceramides, and vitamins.

Step 4. Extra Care
- Use a nourishing mask once a week.
- Layer a hyaluronic acid serum under your moisturizer.
- Dab face oil on any extra-dry patches.
Step 5. Protect Lips and Hands
Keep lip balm with you at all times. Apply hand cream after every wash.

What NOT to Do
- Don’t wash your face with hot water—it strips the protective barrier.
- Don’t go outside right after applying moisturizer—wait at least 30 minutes.
- Don’t use alcohol-based toners or harsh scrubs—they’ll dry you out even more.
- Don’t forget your neck and chest—they need love too.
Prevention Tips
- Drink plenty of water—hydrate from the inside out.
- Humidify your room—use a humidifier or just place bowls of water near radiators.
- Don’t rub your face with a towel—pat gently.
- Eat skin-friendly foods—vitamins A, E, and C make a difference.
The Bottom Line
Winter skincare is all about protection and nourishment. Gentle cleansing, good hydration, rich creams, and lip/hand care will get your skin through the cold months without drama.
Tested on my own face: after I started following these rules, the flaking and redness disappeared.
