Home cleaning, organization and lifestyle tips
You walk into a friend’s place, and it smells like vanilla and cozy. Your place smells like… well, just apartment. Sometimes worse: last night’s dinner, musty corners, stale air. I used to wonder why some homes always smell good while others do not. Turns out, it is not about expensive air fresheners. It is about a few simple habits.
The good news? Making your home smell amazing is easy and cheap. The bad news? If you do not fix the source of bad smells, no amount of fragrance will help.

15 ways to make your home smell great
1. Open the windows
Every morning, open the windows for 5-10 minutes, even in winter. Fresh air is the best air freshener, and it removes stale indoor odors before they settle into fabrics.
2. Keep textiles clean
Curtains, throws, blankets, rugs, and cushion covers soak up odors. Wash them regularly, and the whole apartment will smell fresher almost immediately.
3. Use scented sachets
Place small fabric bags with lavender, mint, dried citrus peels, or cedar in closets, drawers, and behind the couch. They give off a light scent and can also help repel moths.
4. Try reed diffusers
A reed diffuser is one of the easiest ways to keep a steady, pleasant scent in a room. Choose natural oils and avoid overpowering fragrances.
5. Light scented candles
A candle in the evening creates a cozy atmosphere and fills the room with fragrance. Soy or beeswax candles are usually the best choice.

6. Put out coffee beans
Place a small dish of coffee beans in the kitchen or living room. Coffee absorbs odors and smells good while doing it.

7. Use lemon in the microwave
If the microwave smells unpleasant, put lemon slices in a bowl of water and heat it for 2-3 minutes. The steam softens grime, and the lemon helps remove the odor.
8. Keep baking soda in the fridge
An open box of baking soda in the fridge absorbs food smells and helps keep the space fresh between cleanings.
9. Use essential oils wisely
Add a drop of essential oil to a cotton ball and place it in your vacuum cleaner bag, put a drop near a radiator, or add a few drops to your floor-cleaning water. Use a light hand: too much fragrance can feel heavy.
10. Wash your curtains
Kitchen curtains absorb cooking smells quickly. Wash them every 2-3 months, or more often if you cook frequently.
11. Clean the trash can
The trash can is often the real source of bad smells. Wash it weekly with baking soda and vinegar, and sprinkle a little baking soda at the bottom before adding a new bag.
12. Make a DIY room spray
Mix the following in a spray bottle:
- 1/2 cup water
- 1/4 cup vodka or rubbing alcohol
- 10-15 drops of your favorite essential oil, such as lavender, orange, mint, or pine
Spray it in the air or lightly on fabrics. Always test a hidden spot first.

13. Add scented plants
Some houseplants naturally smell good. Try mint, geranium, eucalyptus, or jasmine if your lighting and care routine allow it.
14. Clean your vents
If ventilation pulls in cooking smells from neighbors, check the exhaust fan and consider installing a backdraft damper.
15. Scent your bedding
Add a couple of drops of essential oil to the rinse cycle, or place scented sachets in your linen closet. Keep the scent soft, especially for pillowcases and sheets.
Odor fix cheat sheet
| Smell source | How to fix it |
| Kitchen cooking smells | Ventilate, use the exhaust fan, simmer lemon and cinnamon |
| Musty bathroom | Ventilate, remove mold, use a dehumidifier |
| Fridge | Use baking soda, clean regularly, throw away old food |
| Trash can | Wash regularly and sprinkle baking soda at the bottom |
| Smoke | Air out thoroughly and wash walls and textiles |
What not to do
- Do not try to cover a bad smell with a strong fragrance. You will just create a worse combination.
- Do not rely on cheap synthetic air fresheners if they give you headaches.
- Do not ignore the source. Find and fix the cause first.
- Do not overdo essential oils. Too strong can be just as unpleasant as a bad smell.
Prevention tips
- Air out your place daily.
- Wash textiles regularly.
- Keep trash cans and sinks clean.
- Do not leave strong-smelling food uncovered.
The bottom line
A great-smelling home is a mix of cleanliness, fresh air, and light, pleasant scents. Start by removing bad smells at the source, then add your favorite fragrance through candles, diffusers, plants, or a simple DIY spray.
Tested in my own apartment: after I started washing curtains regularly and using my orange-scented DIY spray, guests started asking what smelled so good.
